On the trail of Roman and Andalusian heritage

This day takes you through the Tunisian hinterland, away from the coaches: the Water Temple of Zaghouan, the Roman city of Dougga, a UNESCO site, and the Andalusian village of Testour.

Dougga is often described as the best-preserved small Roman town in North Africa: temples, theatre, baths and paved streets on a hill above the valley.

Your day, step by step

  1. Zaghouan: The 2nd-century Water Temple at the foot of Mount Zaghouan, where the aqueduct that supplied Carthage began. A short walk in the Andalusian old town.
  2. Dougga (UNESCO): The Capitol, the theatre, the baths and the mosaic houses of a whole Roman town, with a superb view of the countryside.
  3. Testour: A village founded by Andalusians in the 17th century, famous for the clock on its Great Mosque that runs backwards.

At Dougga: the site is on a slope with little shade. Good shoes, a hat and water are a must, especially in summer.
